 AMG Ichthus High School, Vadarevu was started in 1993, for providing Free education to children of poor, socially and economically backward Fishermen community, in Vadarevu and surrounding villages. The school was started with 250 children and now boasts of 1600 students at present. Now there are more than 1600 children in the school, which is located in own premises. These children mainly come from the Fishermen community in Vadarevu and nearby villages. A few children come from different background viz., semi-orphans, children from slums in Chirala and poor children from villages. The children belong to all castes and religions. The only criterion for selection of children is, they should be from Fishermen community and poor . The school started as an English medium school. This was a bold step on the part of Dr. John David. Founder, A. M. G. India, to have English Medium school for the children of illiterate and poor Fishermen. The whole Community Project for Fishermen, Vadarevu, is supported by Woord en Daad, The Netherlands. Ichthus High school is a part of the Community development project. This is a Free school. No feel is charged in the school, as it is aimed at attracting the children of poor fishermen and encouraging them to study and become suitable for alternate professions/ jobs. The school has classes from LKG to 10th grade. Ichthus school is a Day School, as the children come from AMG colonies and from fishermen families in the vicinity and children from nearby villages, which are in the walking distance. The children come to the school in the morning and go back home in the evening. Former students from the school are now working as Teachers, Clerks in Government and Private Sector, Technicians etc. AMG schools aim at the holistic development of the children i.e. development of the Body, Mind and Soul, in order to mould the personality of the children, as productive and constructive citizens of the country. Keeping this in view ample opportunities are provided for games and sports and good food is provided for their bodily development. Teaching is done on the best levels and children are encouraged to participate in different extra-curricular activities, like debate/ essay writing/ painting/ singing competitions, Sports and games etc., to instil in them the spirit of competitiveness and a desire to excel. These competitions help the children to better utilize their Physical and mental faculties and bring out the latent talents in the children. Children are also encouraged to learn spirituality to make them full persons and develop positive qualities in life. Children in AMG schools are provided with the following amenities to make their stay comfortable and live in a decent and dignified environment. It is the intention of Dr. John David and the AMG that, in order to instil self-confidence and the needed intiative to face future competitions and struggles in life, these poor children should be treated on par with middle class family children, who study in commercial school paying high fees. Without proper accomodation and facilities, they can not develop self-confidence and will not be able to compete with children from commercial schools. AMG aim is to help these children to be fit and able to compete in the job-market, when they grow up. Otherwise even after completing their education they will not be successful.
